British Values
Our school values underpin everything we do, and at Potterhanworth we create an environment where our children develop a mature, respectful and sensitive appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of our society.
In addition to explicit teaching through our PSHE programme (One Decision), British Values are woven into children’s learning through rich texts, Collective Worship, our curriculum and events/ activities in and out of school.
Emphasise is placed on British Values to ensure our children are equipped with the knowledge and tools to thrive in modern Britain.
Pupil Voice is central to our ethos. Children in KS2 have the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities through the School Council and groups such as Road Safety, Wellbeing Champions, and Sports Stars. They are an asset to our school.
Please follow the link below for examples of how we actively promote British Values at Potterhanworth:
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) & Wellbeing
Our PSHE is a programme of learning opportunities and experiences which enables our children to grow and develop as individuals. It equips them with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to live healthy, safe, fulfilled and responsible lives.
Whilst adopting a holistic approach to PSHE, we also use 1Decision as our programme of study which provides a progressive sequence of learning experiences to meet the needs of our children at an age appropriate level.
Areas of learning are taught within the context of family life taking care to ensure that there is no stigmatisation of children based on their home circumstances (families can include single parent families, LGBT parents, families headed by grandparents, adoptive parents, foster parents/carers amongst other structures) along with reflecting sensitively that some children may have a different structure of support around them (for example: looked after children or young carers).
This well planned programme, along with our nurturing, supportive school culture, assists children in protecting themselves both on and offline; can improve physical and emotional health and support the development of resilience and achievement in life.
